Spring is in the air, which means all I want to do is sit outside and have a fun drink in my hand. Lately I’ve been trying all the new types of kombucha (see picture below of my then 6 year old son, who LOVES kombucha!). The benefits of kombucha are mainly related to its probiotic content. Probiotics are those good bacteria that our gut loves. We add the good bacteria to our gut, then feed them with fiber from our diet, and it’s the perfect synergy.
Here are my top five health and wellbeing tips for spring:
1. Get out the sunscreen! Stock up now. Start using it daily. Really, we should be using it all year round, but especially now, when the sun is stronger (no longer needed just on our faces, but our legs, arms, hands, etc.)
2. Don’t stop taking vitamin D. Just because it’s no longer winter, doesn’t mean we don’t need vitamin D. Consider tip one; sunscreen. That sunscreen will block your skin’s ability to make vitamin D, so taking it via supplement is just as important now as it was in the winter. Talk to your healthcare provider about a recommended dose, but generally I say 1,000-1,000 IU/day
3. Find some fun spring beverages to help you stay hydrated. When it’s warmer outside, we need more fluid. Consider these non-alcoholic beverages; Kombucha, Lacroix, Spindrift, HopWtr (new favorite), Hint Water, or some delicious iced tea.
4. Get outside for fresh air. This is an especially good reminder for those who work from home. Sometimes I can go an entire day without leaving my house, unless I remind myself how important it is to get outside, breath some fresh air, and see the sun. This is important for mental health, and our ciracdiun rhythms.
5. Take advantage of what’s in season. Check out this list to see what produce is in season, therefore most tasty and least expensive!
